October is National Physical Therapy Month

Posted on October 16th, 2017 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

From the changing colors of the trees to breast cancer awareness, there’s plenty to celebrate in October. And among them is National Physical Therapy (PT) Month. Each October, we take time to celebrate the positive effects PT has had on hundreds of thousands of people and the dedicated physical therapists who work tirelessly to help people and advance their field. We know that we here at Orthopaedic Specialty Group would be nothing without our incredible physical therapists!

All About Physical Therapy Month 2017

In light of the recent opioid crisis occurring in America, this year’s Physical Therapy Month theme is building off of the incredibly successful #ChoosePT campaign that the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) launched several months ago. The main focus of the campaign was to encourage medical professionals to limit how often they prescribe highly addictive pain medication in favor of physical therapy.

How to Know if You Need Physical Therapy

One of the main myths about physical therapy is that it’s only for people who have suffered a trauma or need help regaining some form of motor skills. But in all honesty, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. While people who suffered a traumatic accident are often prescribed PT, most people in the world could benefit from some level of physical therapy. Some of the most common reasons why people come to Orthopaedic Specialty Group is because they’re experiencing:

  • Neck pain or stiffness.
  • Lower back pain or stiffness.
  • Arthritis.
  • Poor balance.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • A sports-related injury.

Why Choose Physical Therapy

First and foremost, physical therapy works. For years, physical therapy has helped people manage their pain in a safe and effective way and has prevented them from needing medication (or sufficiently lowers the amount of medication needed). It’s also important to know that you don’t need a doctor or physician’s note to see a physical therapist, meaning our doors are open to all!
