Everyday Tips to Support Your Mental Health

Posted on May 29th, 2022 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

The best way to ensure you are set up for success for a happy and fulfilling life is to take care of your mental health. Your mental well-being is just as important as your physical well-being. It may sound easier said than done, but even the smallest things can make a big difference in your daily mood.

Make these simple daily lifestyle changes to support your mental health:

Be Nice to Yourself

It’s easy to be hard on yourself if you’re feeling down. One of the best and simplest ways to improve your mental well-being is to be nicer to yourself; that includes giving yourself regular compliments, not being so hard on yourself if you make a mistake, and rewarding yourself for positive achievements.

Eat Some Nutritious Foods

Everyone needs to find and cultivate a healthy relationship with food for better mental health. As well, eat a diverse diet filled with nutritious and vitamin-rich fruits, vegetables, lean meats, grains, and more. Everything in moderation!

Get in Some Exercise

Even if it’s a short walk or climbing a few flights of stairs, exercise can help improve your mood and reduce your stress. Finding a daily exercise routine that works into your schedule and you enjoy can make a major impact on your overall mental health.

Reduce Your Screen Time

Too much time looking at screens and consuming media, especially before bed, can negatively affect your mental health and impact your sleep. Blue light emitted from your screens reduces the body’s melatonin production, the hormone that regulates your sleep cycle. You don’t want to consume your mind with texts, videos, news, and more when your mind should be winding down and relaxing.

Take Some Deep Breaths

Increase your oxygen intake with some deep, relaxing breaths that help you feel calm and reset. During your day, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take just a few minutes to take nice, slow deep breaths counting to five slowly as you breathe in and then the same as you exhale. Repeat several times.

Find Support

If you need someone to talk to about your mental health or any struggles you are facing, don’t hesitate to reach out. Everyone needs help sometimes. Reach out to your friends and loved ones for talks and to spend time with each other, and if needed, contact a professional.
