Health Benefits of Pumpkin

Posted on October 28th, 2021 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

Pumpkins are a classic staple of the fall season. Not only do they make great decorations and are fun to carve into unique jack -o’- lanterns, but they also are very delicious! From savory dinners to tasty sweets, there’s plenty of recipes to try utilizing this great fruit — that’s right, it’s a fruit!

Consider adding more pumpkin into your diet not only for its great taste but for the many health benefits it offers, too:

Helps Boost Your Immunity

The nutrients and vitamins packed in pumpkin can all help boost your immunity. For instance, vitamin A is known to help fight off infections, and vitamin C can increase white blood cell count, which helps wounds heal quicker. Pumpkin is also rich in vitamin E, iron, and folate — all of which can help strengthen your immune system.

Reduced Risk of Chronic Diseases

Pumpkins contain various antioxidants, including alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, which can help neutralize molecules called radicals linked to harming cells and leaving you at risk of developing chronic illnesses.

Improved Vision

Eating the right nutrients, such as vitamin A, lutein, and zeaxanthin can help improve and protect your eyesight. Since our eyesight diminishes as we age, these nutrients are important in our diet.

Low in Calories

Pumpkin is nutrient-dense and very low in calories, making it a great food to promote weight loss. Per cup, pumpkin is less than 50 calories and is 94% water. As well, pumpkin is high in fiber, which helps to curb appetite.

Healthy Skin

Among the great nutrients found in pumpkins are carotenoids, which can act as a natural sunblock. Once digested, the carotenoids turn into vitamin A which then goes to your organs, including your skin, to help protect your skin cells from UV damage found in the sun’s rays. Pumpkin is also rich in vitamin C, which helps make collagen that keeps your skin healthy and strong.
