How Does Stress Affect The Body?

Posted on April 30th, 2022 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

Everyone deals with stress in their lives; it’s normal. But we all deal with our stress differently, and some of us carry more than others. Though some stress can be good, it can affect the body’s functions in a variety of ways, especially if it’s in high amounts.

Here are the many ways serious stress can negatively affect the body’s systems:

Musculoskeletal System

When the body is stressed, muscles are prone to tensing up, like a reflex to protect itself against injury or pain. When chronic stress is present, the muscles are in a constant state of nearness which can trigger other problems in the body and stress-related disorders. This muscle tension can increase pain in any of your muscles or bones, often around the back, shoulders, and chest.

Respiratory System

Stress can affect the respiratory system by causing shortness of breath or rapid breathing as the nasal passageways, and the lungs constrict tightly. For those without respiratory illness or disease, this is normally not much of a concern since the hyperventilation will subside. However, severe stress can have serious consequences for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions.

Cardiovascular System

Acute stress can cause the heart rate to increase and blood vessels to dilate, reducing the amount of blood pumped throughout the body and increasing blood pressure. Once the stress is passed, the body returns to normal. Chronic stress, however, can lead to long-term heart and blood vessel issues that will take a serious toll on the body, leaving you vulnerable to hypertension, stroke, or heart attack.

Gastrointestinal System

The gut functions almost entirely independently from the rest of the body and constantly communicates with the brain. But, stress can disrupt these signals, leading to stomach aches and gastrointestinal distress consisting of diarrhea, bloating, gas, etc. The gut is also home to millions of bacteria, and stress can change the balance and cause more discomfort.
