How to Live Healthier in 2021

Posted on January 22nd, 2021 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

After a long and challenging year, many of us could use a fresh start. Health should always be a priority, and now more than ever, as we still are working to move forward through the Covid-19 pandemic, taking care of your health is a must!

Use 2021 as the year to feel happier and healthier than ever before with these helpful tips:

Exercise Regularly

Not only can staying physically active boost your cardiovascular system, muscular health, and immune system, it can also help reduce stress and improve your mental health. The American Heart Association recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise each week and at least two days a week of muscle-strengthening activities. Some simple ideas to help you incorporate more movement into your daily schedule include:

  • Take 30 minute walks before work, during your lunch break, or after work.
  • Do 30 minutes of strength training with some weights while you watch TV.
  • Jump rope for 15 minutes when you get up in the morning and again later in the evening.
  •  Do squats at your desk in 10-minute increments three times throughout the day.

Eat Right

Eating a healthy and diverse diet is a great way to feel and live a healthy lifestyle. Your diet should include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein and should be limited with processed foods, fast food, and foods high in fat, starches, salt, or sugars. Some simple ways to start eating a healthier diet include:

  • Replace sugary beverages with water
  • Cook more meals at home and order less takeout
  • Try eating and cooking new fruits and vegetables
  • Cut out or limit your alcohol intake

Focus on a Better Night’s Sleep

If you have disrupted sleep patterns, wake up feeling tired, and are sluggish during the day, you’re not alone. Practicing good sleep habits can help you feel happier throughout the day, be more productive, and even boost your immune system. Some ways to try and improve your sleep include:

  • Getting about eight hours of continual sleep a night
  • Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day
  • Turning off electronics before bedtime
  • Not eating before bedtime
  • Exercising regularly
  • Avoiding drinking caffeinated beverages later in the day
  • Sleep in a quiet, dark, and cool environment

Practice More Self-Care

We could all use more relaxation and time to ourselves! Self-care should be an essential part of your regular routine to help promote positive mental health. Just a half-hour a day of time relaxing and focusing on yourself can go a long way. Practice self-care by:

  • Doing your favorite hobby
  • Watching your favorite movie or show
  • Trying someone new
  • Reading a book
  • Cooking or baking a special treat
  • Calling or spending quality time with a friend, loved one, or pet

Protect Yourself From Covid-19 and Other Viruses

Covid-19 is still a risk, so it’s important you continue to do your part in keeping yourself and others safe. Some ways to stay safe include:

  • Wearing a mask outside of your home
  • Social distancing and staying 6 feet away from others
  • Staying home as much as possible
  • Washing and sanitizing your hands frequently
  • Getting the vaccine when it’s available
