How to Stay Healthy And Safe This Holiday Season

Posted on December 7th, 2020 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

2020: the year of the first coronavirus Christmas! No matter the holiday you’re celebrating, the COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly going to have an impact on your usual yearly traditions.

It’s been a stressful year for all of us, but it’s the holiday season, and that means it’s time to be thankful and enjoy your celebrations. This time can still be special, but it’s essential to understand that this is not like any other year, and certain measurements need to be taken to keep everyone safe.

Enjoy the holidays safely this year with help from these guidelines and tips:

Critical Safety Tips

To help prevent the spread of germs that can lead to colds, the flu, and COVID-19 this holidays season, you and everyone in your family or that you live with should:

  • Wash your hands properly and as often – Wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water periodically, especially after touching high-touch areas. If you can’t wash your hands, use a proper hand sanitizer.
  • Social distance – Stay at least 6 feet away from anyone that you don’t live with at all times.
  • Wear a mask – Whenever you leave your home, be sure you are wearing your mask, covering both your mouth and nose. All adults and kids over two years of age should wear a mask.
  • Avoid large crowds – Stay home and avoid any places that have lots of people congregating. Do your necessary shopping at times of the day when the stores are less crowded if you can.
  • Avoid anyone who is sick – If anyone you know has tested positive for COVID-19, the flu, has a cold, or is experiencing any symptoms concurrent with these illnesses, stay away from them.
  • Clean high-touch areas – Any part of your home frequently touched, such as doorknobs and countertops, should be cleaned regularly with a proper disinfectant.
  • Get the flu vaccine – If you, or anyone in your family older than six months, has yet to receive their flu vaccine, there is still time.

Gathering For The Holidays

One of the best parts of this time of year is spending it with your closest friends and family. Unfortunately, this year it is too much of a risk to visit others and have large gatherings. Your safest option is to keep groups small and stay home.

Don’t be afraid to go virtual! With a multitude of technology at our fingertips, it’s easier to stay connected with family and friends than ever. Take some time out of your holiday schedule to virtually spend time connecting with your loved ones. Even though you’re at a distance, it’s possible to still feel close.

If it’s an option, consider outdoor activities! Masks and distance are still necessary, but it’s safer to gather outside. Play games, converse and eat outside instead, where there is airflow and fresh air for everyone to enjoy. If it gets cold, gather around a fire and bundle up!

Get creative celebrating this holiday season, and be safe! Happy holidays!
