Tips For Prioritizing Self-Care in The New Year

Posted on January 12th, 2022 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

Make this the new year all about you and your well-being – after all, you know exactly what you need to feel your best!

Self-care involves setting aside more time to do what makes you happy and helps you feel good. A little bit of self-care each day can go a long way, so make sure this year, you always make giving yourself the love and care you deserve a priority! Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Set a Routine

Whether it’s 5 minutes or an hour a day, create a routine for any time of the day where you focus on self-care. Maybe it involves caring for your teeth, practicing skincare, reading, journaling, meditation, exercise, or whatever else helps make your days happier and more focused on your well-being. A routine can help make it a habit, so you’re always a priority and getting what you need.

Don’t Neglect Your Sleep

Getting enough sleep is an important part of your health and well-being. If you aren’t getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep every night, change up your habits so this becomes more attainable. This may include going to sleep and waking at the same time each day, making your room more of a calming, sleep-friendly space, avoiding caffeine in the later hours, and more.

Move Your Body More

It’s no secret that exercise and regular body movement help maintain good physical and mental health. If you aren’t already incorporating physical activity into your weeks, try looking for new ways to get excited about exercising; test out  a new sport or meet up with friends at the gym or for a walk.

Learn to Relax

We all need rest and relaxation to help us stay feeling refreshed and ready for what’s next. Don’t be afraid to make rest a priority in your life by saying ‘no’ to plans when you’re overwhelmed or tired. No matter what relaxation looks like for you, find more guilt-free ways to incorporate it into your everyday life.

Don’t Ignore Any Ailments

If you struggle with recurring  pain or are experiencing any ailments that are holding you back, don’t ignore them! Visit your doctor and seek treatment so you can get back to focusing on yourself without any distractions or worsening problems.

Be Kind To Yourself

This may be the most important tip because it’s one that many often forget, but being kind to yourself is paramount to any good self-care routine! It’s completely normal to criticize yourself from time to time, but don’t make this a habit – you don’t want to be your own worst critic. Don’t be afraid to compliment, admire, or even thank yourself for all that you do each and every day. And if you slip up, just remember to forgive and go forward. We could all use some more compassion every day.
