Tips For Sunburn Relief

Posted on August 25th, 2022 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

After a long day at the beach, you take a look in the mirror. And at that moment, you realize you are as red as a lobster. Sometimes we forget to reapply sunscreen frequently when having fun, and it happens.

In Fairfield County, CT, our team at Orthopaedic Specialty Group are here to share some sunburn remedies so you can continue to enjoy your summer:

Take a Pain Reliever

Your sunburn may be painful to touch from too much sun exposure. For immediate results, take a nonprescription pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. The medication will temporarily alleviate your pain.

Apply Lotion

One of the most effective ways to get sunburn relief is to apply aloe vera or calamine lotion multiple times for a few days. Using these lotions will promote healing and provide you with much-needed burn relief. Additionally, put the product in the fridge so that it can cool the affected area when you use it.

Cool Your Skin

Since your skin is inflamed and warm, one of the best things to do is apply cold water to your skin. Try taking ten minute cold showers throughout the day. Also, you may want to get a damp, cold washcloth to rest on the sunburned area. Trust us; it will make you feel so much better!

Stay Hydrated

Always be sure you are drinking enough fluids to reduce the symptoms. You never want to be sunburnt and dehydrated. If you are dehydrated, your body cannot heal from extreme sun exposure. Make sure to drink lots of water so you can start feeling like yourself again and get back to having fun with your family and friends.

Remain Inside

Before you spend another day at the beach, be sure to give your skin enough time to recover. If you don’t let your sunburn heal, you will continue to experience pain. You should check the daily UV index, which predicts sun exposure levels, to determine if it is safe to be outside.
