Why is Arthritis Worse in The Winter?

Posted on December 22nd, 2022 by Orthopaedic Specialty Group

If you have arthritis, you’re probably familiar with the fact that your symptoms can worsen during cold weather. This is because extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, can adversely affect our joints and muscles, leading to increased pain and stiffness in those with arthritis.

Understanding Why Arthritis Is Worse in the Cold

Cold Temperatures

At the core of this issue are the nerves surrounding our joints. During cold weather, these nerves become more sensitive, leading to increased pain as a result of any pressure or movement. For example, if you already have a limited range of motion due to arthritis, it’s likely that joint pain will be worse when temperatures drop outside.

Air Pressure

Changes in barometric pressure, which often accompany colder weather, can also cause joint tissues to swell and become inflamed. This can make the pain even more intense for those with arthritis.

Low Humidity

It’s also important to note that humidity levels tend to drop during wintertime, which can further dry our skin and joints. When skin becomes dry, it’s easier for bacteria and viruses to enter our system through cracks and cuts in the skin; this not only increases our risk of infection but can also lead to increased inflammation in affected areas (e.g., joints).

Less Activity

Finally, colder weather typically means less physical activity due to shorter days and bad weather conditions; this lack of movement can lead to tightness in the joints, making them even more prone to discomfort and pain associated with arthritis.
